Letter from the new Editor-in-Cheif of Talon Student Media
It’s a new year, and a new Talon. My name is Chandler Gibson, I’m majoring in Mass Communication and minoring in Pre Law, I’m from Dallas, Texas and I recently took over as Editor-in-Chief of Talon Student Media.
I’m so excited about the year ahead.
The previous EIC, Claire Wallace, did amazing rebuilding The Patriot Talon, and I hope to continue that legacy of excellence.
If you had told me a couple of years ago, when I started at UT Tyler, that I would be the editor-in-chief of my college newspaper, I would have asked for a glass of whatever you’re having.
I came from a place where I was told to drop out of journalism because I didn’t have what it took. Well, I’m the captain now. I love this school, and I love this paper, as much as it can frustrate the Swoop out of me. I get up every day knowing that there are stories to tell, and that somebody knows something. I think about how even though this is a college newspaper, it has real-world implications that I have to handle. I wouldn’t have run for EIC if I thought I would do the Talon a disservice.
I do have classes, so, I mean, I can’t sit there and think about real world implications for too long, or I’ll have some more of them.
I want to start traditions, and bring this paper into the future of journalism. We’re going to emphasize community engagement through our amazing Managing Editor, Yasmeen Khalifa, and be a bigger and more topical name on this campus.
If UT Tyler is going to be the educational driver of East Texas, we’re going to be the collegiate journalistic force running alongside.
I started on The Patriot Talon in Fall of 2017, working as a staff writer. I wrote stories about housing, politics, budgets and even some award-winning opinion pieces.
I did some amazing things during my time as A&E editor, including a story about the Fall 2017 housing crisis, in which I became the only person on staff to date to have interviewed President Tidwell. I also wrote an article about a moldy storage shed across from Harvey Deck, exposing the structural and health code violations, and UT Tyler ripped it out! I helped leave a physical mark on this campus, and I don’t want to stop there.
Some upcoming things we’re excited about include podcasting!
This semester, you can find our podcasts on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio and Stitcher. We’re currently named Talon Student Media everywhere, but check out the paper and the website for more info about current podcasts and developing projects.
We’re working on a news podcast covering campus news and larger headlines, a variety show covering everything from cold cases to “The Bachelor” and even some paranormal possibilities.
We’re moving to a new location on campus in the College of Arts and Sciences, where the Writing Center used to be. We haven’t moved yet, so for now, meetings are still in UC 3114 on Mondays at 5:15 p.m.
I hope that a new location gives us a new perspective on this campus, and shows unique and exciting ways to tell better stories.
Send me emails to firstname.lastname@example.org about anything you’d like to know, any stories you think we should be covering, any feedback you have--the good, the bad and the ugly.
