Women's soccer maintaining ASC grip

A sixth minute goal by Ashley Crawford and two Edward Anaya goals turned out to all the Patriots men and women soccer team needed to defeat East Texas Baptist University last Monday night at Citizen’s 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

The women’s team held their second place position in the American Southwest Conference with a 3-0 victory over the Tigers. They remain one game behind undefeated Hardin-Simmons. The men kept their playoff hopes alive with the victory.  They remain one game out of the last conference tournament spot.

Sparked by the early goal, the women controlled the ball most of the first half. Lauren Thomas scored the Patriots’ second goal off a pass from Brenda Salinas in the 22nd minute. The Patriots had a goal in the 36th called back from after an offside call in the penalty box.

Lauren Daily found the net for the Patriots’ third and final goal. Just 45 seconds into the second half, Daily squeaked a shot by Tiger goalkeeper Tamara Carlisle.

The Patriots’ took 16 shots during the match. The Tigers managed only 4. Sam Fraser made two saves for the Patriots and picked up her third shutout of the season. Fraser was also named the ASC Defensive Player of the Week last Tuesday.

“The girls came out and executed from the first whistle,” coach Stefani Webb said. “Our biggest concern now is to hold on to our number two spot, and get a first round bye at the conference tournament.”

On the men’s side, Anaya scored the Patriots first goal in 36th minute. He was assisted Brad Bullock. The Patriots’ second goal was knocked in by a Tiger player in the 43rd minute. Anaya scored the last goal three minutes later.

Anaya received ASC Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday. Anaya had three goals and an assist in the Patriots two wins against LeTourneau and ETBU. Mark Oliphant made four saves for the Patriots in the shutout. Tiger goalkeeper Zane Barnes made eight saves and allowed the three goals.
