Tyler police officials have taken a suspect into custody in regard to the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old male at Varsity Place Apartments last night, according to a notification released by Campus Police Chief Mike Medders.
Tyler police responded to an alleged assault at 3400 Varsity Dr. around 7:20 p.m., according to the active calls list.
Around 8:50 p.m, campus police were informed the victim was shot in his apartment and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release states.
In September 2011, Tyler police found nine shell casings in a Varsity Place parking lot after students reported hearing gunshots near campus. No injuries or property damage was reported at the time of the shooting.
Ricky R. Davis died from a fatal shooting at Varsity Place in October 2009. At the time, witnesses told investigators that Jeremy Jarrod Walker fired shots into a crowd gathered in the apartment complex. Walker, a Tyler Junior College student, was later charged with murder.
