Aromas of spicy meat and onions signaled the start of Saturday’s outdoor homecoming chili cook-off.

Tents lined the parking lot near the soccer field, as dozens of students from more than 20 organizations gathered around their cook pots, testing their culinary skills.

Taste winners of the event were first place, Kappa Sigma; second place, Patriot Orchestra; and third place, Alpha Chi Omega.

Showmanship winners were first place, Association of Childhood Education International; second place, Alpha Chi Omega; and third place, Phi Kappa Pi.
Senior Cortland Jones, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, relied on his personal recipe, using deer meat as the primary ingredient.

“We watched and hunted this sucker for three years before he was put in there,” Jones said, describing the chili as “Feng Shui.”

Kevin Morris, a senior mechanical engineering major and second-year participant of the event, savored the results.

“My favorite part is the spiciness, the overwhelming spiciness,” Morris said.

Black Student Association members, second-year competitors, prepared a Mexican-style thick chili.

“Delicious,” said senior Ayrric Jones, a mechanical engineering major. Jones said people who try his chili always come back for more.

Catholic Club members remained mum on ingredients of their chili, an old family recipe.
