Student Government Association members opened three senatorial seats last week after one-fifth of the newly-elected senators failed to show for their first three required meetings.
Elected senators Megan Thomas, Randy Owens and Jason Heard never accepted nor denied the position after the Sept. 24-25 elections, Parliamentarian Rene Hernandez said.
SGA senators can miss three required events before they absences are reviewed by the general assembly, according to SGA bylaws. The senators were voted out of SGA nearly unanimously by the general assembly.
The elected senators missed the Oct. 1 meeting, the “President’s Dinner” and the Oct. 8 meeting, SGA officials said.
SGA now has 16 open seats, and they need students to apply for those positions, SGA president Kerrie Ambort said. Ambort said appointments are scheduled for Wednesday.
Those interested can apply by sending her an e-mail at: kambort@patriots.uttyler.edu, or calling 903.565.5557 to make an appointment.
Ambort said it’s critical prospective senators apply soon as to attend the Oct. 17 SGA retreat, where newly elected members learn SGA procedure.
Other agenda items discussed at the meeting are as follows:
n Approved amendments to the student government appropriations committee guidelines, including adding a three-business-day deadline for the SGAC to respond to a request.
n Discussed ways to make the crossing between The Cambridge and the University safer.
n Discussed how to create more “motorcycle only” parking spots, so one motorcycle doesn’t use an entire car parking spot.
The SGA has meetings 5 p.m. every Wednesday in the Braithwaite Building Room 1025. The meetings are open to the public to voice concerns.
