Junior Kortlan Porter’s campaign for a leading position with the Student Government Association is simple: He wants to help students.
He has served as a senator for the College of Engineering and Computer Science and now wants the responsibility of being vice president.
Porter, a computer science major, is running unopposed for the seat during this week’s election and could be a shoe-in to win barring any write-in challenges.
“I just want to be able to help the campus and as many students as possible,” he said.
Porter also serves on the Student Life Committee.
Freshman Lee Radley said he is searching for an opportunity to gain experience, a goal he believes can be fulfilled by serving as Student Government Association treasurer.
Radley, a civil engineering major from Royce City, is uncontested for the post in this week’s election.
“Once I graduate, I would like to be a construction manager, and serving as treasurer can teach me how to be fiscally responsible as well as good leadership skills,” he said.
The SGA treasurer is responsible for helping decide how to distribute $10,000 allotted to student organizations through the Student Government Appropriation’s Committee.
The treasurer also serves on the Student Fees Advisory Board made up of students SGA members, faculty and staff.
Parliamentarian
After serving four years with the Student Government Association, Rene Hernandez still hasn’t had enough.
He’s running for a third term as parliamentarian — a term he hopes to serve as a graduate student.
The senior psychology student has served as a senator for University Pines, SGA treasurer and parliamentarian the past two years.
He is unopposed in this week’s elections and is on his way to a third term barring opposition from a write-in candidate.
Hernandez said his experience is not his only qualification for the job.
“I feel that I have a sharp, analytical mind that can help solve many of our issues,” he said. “Further, I have an understanding of the constitution and bylaws that is second to none.”
He said the parliamentarian’s role is extremely vital to the process of student government. He said he operates according to Robert’s Rules of Order, a guide to parliamentary procedure.
Hernandez is a member of Pi Kappa Phi, an intern with Wellness and Prevention Education Services and works at the campus bookstore.
