Soccer teams victorious in ASC opener

The University's men's and women's soccer team flexed their muscles in their American Southwest Conference opener against McMurry on Thursday afternoon. Both teams rolled to a 6-0 victory.

The women began the afternoon controlling the ball for most of the first half and taking a 2-0 into halftime.

Kasey Kemp knocked in the Patriots first goal off a corner kick by Lauren Daily in the 5th minute. Hannah Parcel scored later in the half, getting a shot past a sliding Hillary Chambers of McMurry.

The Patriots wasted no time in the second half, scoring in the 52nd minute. Lindsey Edwards put a shot into the net off a corner kick. She also scored the Patriots fifth goal in minute 84.
The Patriots showed their defensive skills allowing only two shots in the game, one shot of which was on goal.

The women's team improved to 3-2 with the win and face conference foe Hardin-Simmons, the defending ASC champions, at 1 p.m. Saturday at home.

The Patriots men's team mirrored the women's game. They scored five goals in the first half, starting with Jared Taylor in the 11th minute.

Their next three goals came within just over four minutes of each other by Troy Coffee, Elijah Shipman and Brandon Warren.

The Patriots final two goals came in the 43rd and 66th minute by Chris Powell and Jeremias Benitez.

McMurry only had two shots in the game, none were on goal.

The men's team earned their second win of the season with the victory over McMurry. They also face Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at home, beginning after the women's game.
