A retired University professor and his wife remain hospitalized in Dallas after a May 23 car accident that left both severely injured.
Professor Emeritus Lynn Sherrod and Marjorie Sherrod suffered broken legs and other broken bones in the one-car accident, Dr. Don Killebrew, a family friend, said.
Mrs. Sherrod is out of intensive care, but Sherrod is recovering slowly, Killebrew said.
The Sherrods where driving east on I-20 near Farm-to-Market Road 2932 when Dr. Sherrod reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, drove off the highway and landed in a creek, an employee at Terrell Highway Patrol Office said. The employee declined to give her full name.
The Sherrods had just returned from a Hawaiian vacation and were driving home from a Dallas airport, Killebrew said.
"The physician is guardedly optimistic," Killebrew said. "Dr. Sherrod was in ICU and he was being treated for his injuries. His wife was being treated ... she was doing fine."
Sherrod served as dean of the College of Science and Mathematics from 1975-2001 and biology professor from 1975-2006 when he retired.
Associate Professor James Koukl said he is Sherrod's friend and former colleague.
"When I came in 1979 he was my boss, he was a friend, easy to get along with. We played golf together. Just a good boss," Koukl said. "We send our best wishes."
Killebrew said Sherrod is well liked and respected.
"He's a good friend. We hope he will be OK," he said.
