A Hallsville man is dead and another man is in custody following an early morning shooting Wednesday at Varsity Place Apartments, 3900 Varsity Dr., Tyler police said.
Keith Dotson, 21, of Houston, was arrested for unrelated warrants for criminal trespass and traffic violations shortly after the 2 a.m. shooting that claimed the life of Ricky R. Davis, 20, police records show.
Police investigators are working to obtain an arrest warrant for the slaying, said Don Martin, public information officer.
“In earlier reports, we said he (Dotson) was the shooter. Because of further investigation, we are backing off of that a little bit,” Martin said.
Witnesses told police an assault happened just prior to the shooting.
The witnesses also told investigators the suspect went to an apartment where he obtained a handgun and fired several shots into a crowd gathered in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
Davis, who sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, was the only person struck by gunfire, Martin said.
