The Mr. Alpha Chi pageant brought back that loving feeling to the East Texas Crisis Center on Thursday night by raising $1,143 for women and children of domestic violence.
Mark Austin Norville, a junior, portrayed Maverick from "Top Gun" and won the title of Mr. Alpha Chi along with a $150 prize.
"I really had no idea I would win, but I put my best foot forward," Norville said.
Patrick New, Marco Weidmer and Brett Mariani won the title of first runner-up competing together as Team Anchorman, with each of them portraying a different character from "Anchorman."
"We just wanted to support Alpha Chi Omega and the East Texas Crisis Center. We had a ball putting it together," New said.
An audience of 200 decided the popular vote winner by putting money into an empty popcorn tin with their favorite contestants name on it.
At the end of the night, Travis Baldrige, who portrayed a guido from "Jersey Shore," had the most money in his tin and won the title along with a cookie bouquet.
Other contestants in the Hollywood themed event portrayed Kanye West, Forrest Gump, McSteamy from "Grey's Anatomy" and the Old Spice commercial man.
"All contestants received a coupon to Jersey Mike's and a pizza dinner before the show," president Lisa Baldridge said.
A silent auction conducted outside the University Center Auditorium doors included restaurant gift cards, bath and body products, a University sweatshirt and gift cards for beauty services.
Two $25 gift cards for Chili's were given out as door prizes during the pageant's intermissions.
All donations and proceeds from the auction and ticket sales benefited the crisis center.
"The money will go to the shelter. It will benefit housing programs, help ladies with job employment and feed and give ladies money to pay utilities," representative of the crisis center Angela Rowell said.
"Just the fact that we can focus on young people and make them more aware of the signs of domestic violence and where to go get help and free counseling was my favorite part of the pageant."
