Seventeen students gathered at the University Pines clubhouse Tuesday for a one-time break dancing class taught by Brooke Bradley. Bradley, a former hip-hop (urban dancing) student at a studio in Longview, sought to teach fellow students a dance to “The Master Beat” remix song, along with any other tricks such as, floor poses and spinning flips.
Freshman Dasha Gillispie attended to “become an amazing break-dancer, and learn to spin and pose.” The class also attracted inexperienced dancers. “I’ve never break danced before, so I wanted to try it out,” University student Ashley Meneoza said.
The class started off with headstands proving difficult for most students, but they later proved themselves true break-dancers by mastering the hip-hop portion of the class, which was a dance Bradley had learned from a music video on YouTube created by Larz and Marley.
Break-dance fan and University Pines resident assistant Ole Madera finds the dancing a relief. “I’ve learned that if you are tired after a long day of class,” Madera said, “break dancing is a great way to relax and let go.”
