Several gunshots were heard by students around campus last night at about 8:40 p.m.

The shots were fired from a moving vehicle by Varsity Place apartments on Varsity Drive. Currently, no injuries have been reported and no vehicle or suspect descriptions have been provided.

Because the apartments are not owned by the University, the City of Tyler Police department is investigating the shooting and have found shell casings in proximity to the scene, according to the campus crime alert.

"We did locate nine shell casings they were in a drive at the rear of the complex," Don Martin, Tyler Police public information officer, said. "There has been no reports of victims being shot or property damage just yet."

Martin said there is no indication of the motive of the shots fired.

"We don’t know if the shots were shot at someone or something or just up in the air," he said.

"Varsity Place Apartments is not University owned or controlled, but the campus community is reminded that incidents that occur there could easily carry over to the campus. Remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings.Report any suspicious persons or activity to police." University police department officials stated.
