A dominating pitching performance and a late inning run propelled the Patriots to a double header sweep over Schreiner University. The Patriots defeated the Mountaineers 5-1 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon in Kerrville.
In game one, Aaron McCain plated the first two run of the day the first in the second inning; the second run coming in the fifth inning. Austin Newell drove in McCain each time on singles.
Schreiner scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth. Pete Trevino led off the inning with a single, and later scored on a single by Jesse Paredes.
The Patriots scored two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Jordon Vierra started the sixth with a single and later scored on an error. Keenan Duke singled home Hayden Chick for the Patriots second run of the inning.
Vierra singled in the Patriots lone run of the seventh. Justin Juneau scored on the play after reaching base on a single earlier in the inning.
Chase Willard improved to 2-0 on the season with another overpowering performance. Willard pitched a complete game, one run on five hits while striking out four.
Colton Hermes took the loss for Schreiner.
The Patriots wasted no time in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
Newell drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a ground out by Cody Jones. The next batter, Juneau, was hit by a pitch and both runners scored on a single by Nathan Skeen.
The scoring continued in the third inning. Newell led the inning off with a walk, followed by a single by Jones. Both scored on a triple by Juneau.
The Mountaineers responded and took in the bottom of the third. Patriot pitcher Matt Sparks loaded the bases to start the inning, and J.P Garcia singled to bring in two runs.
Curt Jaeger scored an unearned run later in the inning, and Matt Tomasello capped things off with a two RBI double.
Matt Schimpf relieved Sparks, and shut the door on the Mountaineers, allowing only one hit for the remaining 4.2 innings.
The Patriots regained tied things up in the top of the fourth. Jared Barnett scored on an error by the third baseman.
The game remained tied until the seventh when Jake Ashley scored on an error.
Schimpf finished things off with a one-two-three seventh, striking out Eric Bukowski to end the game.
Newell finished the afternoon 2-5 with three walks, two RBI’s and two runs scored.
The two victory improve the Patriots to 3-2 overall. They will face American Southwest Conference West Division favorite Texas Lutheran at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at Irwin field.
