Name: David Barnes
Age: 23
Hometown: Florence, S.C.
Major: English
Class: Senior
What brings you to the University?
I decided to come to UT Tyler a couple winters ago after taking a walk one evening with a friend on the campus. It was a nice walk.
What is your favorite pastime?
My favorite pastime is probably reading, but I enjoy outdoor activities when I am able.
Who was the person who most influenced you and how?
My father has been a very strong source of comfort and guidance for me, especially these past few years, but I’m not sure I can pinpoint a single person who influenced me most. I’d like to say Rich Mullins or someone comparable, but that’s more lie than not.
What is your best attribute?
My best attribute, though I haven’t so much attained it yet, but am growing into it more fully with each passing day, would be the ability to hold my tongue.
What/who influenced you to choose your major?
I like to read and write. An English major is also fun in that your work is arbitrary, based on whether you can prove validity in an assertion, not whether it is true or right.
Outside of your major what class would you like to take and why?
I missed out on Dr. Strong’s rock ’n’ roll course. I would have liked to have taken that mostly because my other classes with him have been really, really fun.
What kind of student are you?
I am a regular student, I think.
Where do you see yourself professionally in 10 years?
Hopefully in 10 years I’ll be teaching somewhere in the mountains.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve is people singing songs without knowing the words. My brother did it when we were young, and I still can’t get past it.
What are your plans after graduation?
My plans after graduation mostly entail any job that will take care of my student loans.
What is the one thing no one would ever guess about you?
I used to play in the NBA.
