Four of The University of Texas at Tyler’s 2009 Distinguished Alumni will be honored at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the UT Tyler Ornelas Activity Center as part of this year’s homecoming activities.
Honorees are chosen based on outstanding contributions to their chosen profession since graduation from the University. Those being honored include Distinguished Alumni Michael Lujan, M. Ed. ‘01, Brett Sheldon, B.A.A.S. ‘89, and The Honorable James T. Worthen, B.S. ’78, M.S. ‘99, and this year’s Young Alumna Donna Cummings, B.A.A.S, ’03.

In 2002 Lujan, then assistant principal at Douglas Elementary School created a school-subject flip chart of state standards by grade. He and Mrs. Lujan used credit cards to pay for printing the first 1,000 charts for kindergarten through fifth grade. The Lujans made $6,000 selling the charts at a principals’ conference in Austin.
Interest quickly skyrocketed and Lujan resigned from his principal’s job in 2003 and Mrs. Lujan left her job as a banker. He now has three warehouses with 53 full-time employees, including eight former educators.
Mentoring Minds has the largest digital printing operation between Dallas and Shreveport. The company sells 700 different products, and the customers no longer are teachers and school districts. Many of the products help students prepare for state standardized tests. Mentoring Minds creates products for specific Texas use as well as more general materials for use in schools nationwide.
