Disgust with male gender for having lack of respect for women everywhere

“Guys are Jerks.” Unfortunately, this statement is too often true. Most male college students are not chivalrous. Instead of seeing men opening doors for ladies, or helping someone carry a heavy load, the guys are too occupied talking with their friends or texting to show common decency.

When I went through ALERT, a Christian training and service organization, there were some basic courtesies taught, you called your superiors Sir; you said ma’am to the ladies, you opened doors for ladies, and you had the basic respect for women. By no means am I advocating non-equality for women, but I am stating that we men need to show women the respect they deserve.

Why do we respect women? We respect them because they are someone’s mother, someone’s daughter, or someone’s sister. We men should respect women because without them we would be in a horrid situation. Women are the foundation of society and we should respect them and be chivalrous to them.

Yet, men are not. I, in my time at UT Tyler, have seen more male faculty than male students show respect to women. Instead of treating women like someone’s daughter, we lie about them, we use them, we make jokes about them, and we talk inappropriately about them. Guys, before you do something with a young lady, ask yourself, would you want some guy to do that with your sister?

Why are men no longer chivalrous? I think it is because we are selfish, we care more about ourselves than the others around us. If we really had other’s best interests in mind, we would go out of our way to help others. This basic respect for our common man is lacking in all areas of our daily life. I have seen a man in a wheelchair struggling to get up a hill and students pass him by pretending not to see his predicament. What is wrong with us?

It is the little things that sometime mean the most. I would encourage each of us, to show some random acts of kindness, to bless someone today. You never know who’s life you could change.
