Voters must decide between sophomore Yesenia Lugo and freshman Ashton Wright this week for Student Government Association’s secretary.
Both tout their experience and believe in strong communication as key to being a successful leader.
Lugo, a political science major from Little River Academy, said her experiences in the University Model United Nations, the SGA communications committee, and the Alpha Chi Omega sorority will help her perform the required duties of secretary.
She said she is observant, a good listener, and can take fast, detailed notes. “You need to listen to constituents in order to help them,” she said.
“My platform is to help constituents in any way I can. As secretary, I’d have a close relationship with the president and be able to inform him or her of issues students bring up that need to be addressed.”
She believes observing former SGA secretary Alyssa Dorman while on the communications committee set a good example for the position. “She was a good role model, and I want to follow in her footsteps,” Lugo said.
Wright, a nursing major from Royse City, said she drew inspiration to run from serving on the SGA communications committee and observing secretaries Mikal Huff and David Kelley.
“I like the communication aspect of the job,” Wright said. “Several SGA members asked me to run for office because I am calm and good at talking to people.”
Wright’s experience includes serving as secretary and treasurer of her high school debate team, section leader of high school band, and aiding with communications for Kappa Kappa Psi, a band service fraternity.
