A group of University students want to unify the campus through humor in a performance set for Thursday in the UC Ballroom.

The Patriot Act —  students who have a niche for theater and drama —  plan to perform at Patriot Act Improv Comedy Night beginning at 8 p.m.

Jamey Whitley, one of the group’s founders, said he wants students to be united and feel the University has a tradition. Improv theater is a comedy show where actors perform spontaneously.

Whitley said he wants students to get involved in on-campus activities by coming and enjoying themselves during the show.

“There is a lot of talent in Tyler and I want to bring that talent to students at UT Tyler.  We want to provide more entertainment for students and have something to help them relax while they’re studying for finals,” he said.

He said students in the Patriot Act have numerous abilities and experience in drama and entertainment. Other students involved in the organization are Aaron Smith, Reagan Roy, Will Ross, Jack Adams and Brian Sikes. Two of the students stood-in for “Disaster Movie” and another will soon try out for Saturday Night Live, he said.

The Patriot Act doesn’t intend to just supply wit and laughs for one night though.  “During the spring semester I would like to have regular improv nights once a month and also conduct a play.  I want all the sororities, fraternities and all other students to come out and fun,” Whitley said.

He said he hopes audience participation can play an important part in the performance.

Admission is free.

Dr. Molly Johnson, director of Opera and Music Theatre, and staff teacher Michael Ward assist the group and their performance.
