Chandler named Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year

The University’s men’s track and field team took second place behind the top ranked team in the country at the American Southwest Conference championships.

The Patriots finished with 132 points behind McMurry’s 326 points.

The victory for McMurry is their twelfth consecutive conference win.

The women’s team placed fifth. Texas Lutheran edged out McMurry for the championship.

Jeff Chandler won three long-distance races: 10,000, 50,000 and 3000 meter.

The three victories earned Chandler the 2010 Male Track and Field Athletes of the Year award and the All-ASC team.

Chris Stonestreet and Jared Haney joined Chandler on the All-ASC team. Stonestreet picked up a victory in the hammer throw.

He also placed second in the shot put and sixth in the discuss throw.

Tyler Golden placed third in the shot put behind Stonestreet.

He also took sixth in the javelin throw behind teammate Ed Palencia who placed fourth.

Mark Saroni placed second behind Chandler in the 10,000 meter race. He also placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run.

Taylor Reed took second in men’s pole vaulting behind McMurry’s Cory Altenberg.

On the women’s side, Leah Solomon placed third in the 100 meter hurdle and seventh in the triple jump.

Ashton Wells placed third in women’s hammer throw.

The women’s 4x100 meter relay team set a new school record. Lauren Daily, Lauren Thomas, Chelsea Fiscus and Solomon ran the race in 53.14 seconds.

Chandler, Reed and Stonestreet earned spots in the NCAA National Championships on May 20-22 in Cleveland, Ohio.
