Student safety and campus crime are sometimes overlooked during the college evaluation process. “We believe it is important for students to be aware of crime on campus and in the surrounding community,” said Dominik Mazur, founder of StateUniversity.com.
Every year StateUniversity.com releases a campus safety report after analyzing 450 colleges and universities and assigning a safety rating to each school. Violent crimes have a heavier weight on the safety score than non-violent crimes.
Safety ratings are based on campus assault, robbery, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, rape, and murder. Campus safety ratings and academic quality of the school had no impact on each other, the report showed.
The UT Tyler campus crime statistics showed three violent crimes — two incidents of aggravated assault and one rape incident. There were no applicable reports of manslaughter or robbery. Also, 21 burglary and 15 larceny-theft charges, totaling in 36 property crimes were reported, according to StateUniversity.
