Dr. D. Harold Doty joined the University in May to serve as the new dean of the University’s College of Business and Technology. He views the change as an opportunity to increase exposure of the department both in East Texas and beyond.
“UT Tyler presents a tremendous opportunity for business school dean,” Doty said.
“The University has outstanding faculty, and it appears the community is incredibly supportive and excited about the business school.”
Doty, a former professor and dean of the business college at the University of Southern Mississippi, succeeds Dr. Jim L. Tarter, who returns to teaching.
An award-winning professor and researcher, Doty holds a Ph.D. in management and master’s of business administration degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
He previously served as chair of the Department of Strategy and Human Resources in the Whitman School at Syracuse University and faculty member at the University of Arkansas.
Doty said the University is at the perfect point of development as it transitions from a medium to large business school.
The student body is significantly better than average, and the opportunity exists to enhance its representation and profile as an exemplary business college, he said.
“As we move forward we are not burdened by a flagship university but benefit from the sister university, UT-Austin,” he said.
His focus for the department centers on three main areas: presence, profile and reputation.
“We are developing leaders for a better tomorrow,” Doty said, crediting the foundation laid by his predecessor.
“We do that by instilling five core values in students: professional proficiency, technological competence, global awareness, social responsibility and ethical courage,” he added.
Dr. Peter J. Fos, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said he’s pleased with the department’s new direction and drive.
“Dr. Doty brings a wealth of experience to the position, and we are pleased to welcome him to the University,” Fos said.
“He will be a great asset to the College of Business and Technology,” Fos said.
