ASC play over, tennis prepares for tourney

A 9-0 sweep of University of Texas at Dallas sends the men’s and women’s tennis teams into the American Southwest Conference tournament undefeated against conference opponents.

Both teams have won four straight division titles and are after their third straight conference title.

In doubles play on Saturday, the women dropped a total of four games, winning with scores of 8-1, 8-1 and 8-3.

Lauren Giovannini set the tone in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0. Ashley Abro finished the day with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

The men’s team worked a little harder against UT Dallas. In doubles play, the Patriots picked up 8-5 and 8-6 victories before singles play began.

Brad Fenter and Austin Gonzalez each took care of their opponent with 6-1, 6-0 wins.

Adam Chirhart and Kevin Wright fought for their victories winning close first sets, but dominating their respective second sets.

The wins improve the women’s team to 14-3 on the season, and extend their winning streak to six.

The men improve to 12-6 on the season, and snap a losing streak of three.

Next up for both teams is the American Southwest Conference tournament, being played here at Summers Tennis Complex.
