Yesterday, police arrested a 19-year-old male as the alleged offender of the assault incident on Tuesday.

Dearion Deshon Dews is charged with attempted sexual assault, and is currently held in the Smith County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

A female jogging near Varsity Drive and Old Omen Road reported assault by an unknown offender on Tuesday. She documented that the offender grabbed her and tried to drag her near parking lot 7 and Old Omen Road, and proceeded to solicit sexual actions on her body.

The offender released the victim and left the scene when a passing motorist noticed the incident and slowed down.

The University Police Department issued a statement to all students concerning the situation.

"The University of Texas at Tyler Police Department continues to urge the campus community to walk/jog in pairs or groups. Persons are more susceptible to becoming a crime victim when alone. Stay in well lighted areas and report any suspicious persons or activity to police."
