New lights installed this summer on the practice soccer field mean intramural sport enthusiasts won't have to stop playing at dark.

Students and University officials worked together to use $130,000 in student fees to purchase and install four posts with lights, Dr. Howard Patterson, vice president of student affairs, said.

This past fall some intramural players asked the Student Government Association for assistance to find a way to get more playing time on the practice field and proposed lights, recreational facilities director Bob Hepler said.

Nearly 60 percent of juniors who fail to take the required ETS Proficiency Profile test may be barred from registering for fall classes.

Currently only 479 of the 1,200 or 40 percent of eligible juniors meet the requirement, according to information released by program coordinator Dr. Lou Ann Berman.

University officials may place an “administrative hold” preventing these students from registering for more classes.

The requirement affects all juniors with less than 90 credit hours.

Assistant coach Stan Phelps is one of nearly 100 applicants vying to head the Patriots’ baseball team for next season.

University officials launched a search to fill the position after head coach James Vilade — the first and only coach the team has ever had — resigned effective at the end of this season.

He accepted a position as vice president of Premier Baseball Academy in Plano and also plans to work as an associate scout for the Florida Marlins.

Dr. Howard Patterson, vice president of student affairs, is in charge of the search for Vilade’s successor.
