The end of the fall semester is an exciting time, and the holidays fast approaching. But with the stress of finals looming over every student, some take extreme measures to keep their focus.

According to a report from National Public Radio, teenagers and young adults spend about $2.3 billion on heavily caffeinated drinks such as Monster, Rock Star and Red Bull, and the market continues to grow.

There is also Red Line, energy “shots,” the “plus energy” option at Starbucks and Smoothie King.

Although Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs said he’s never thought of himself as a world traveler, he plans to move halfway around the globe at the end of this semester.

Hobbs said he met his future wife, Piengpen Na Pattalung, in Denton at The University of North Texas where she was studying to complete her doctorate in higher education. The two married in Thailand on Jan. 1, 2007.

The Patriots volleyball team pledged to “Dig for the Cure” at their home game on Oct. 25 against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and they dug deep.

The team ended the match against UMHB with 72 digs, coach Kristee Phelps said, which is 18 digs above average for the Patriots.

The ladies collected flat donations before game day, as well as pledges for a specific amount for every Patriot dig in the match.

With the final count in, Phelps said her team raised more than $1,000, all of which will go to help the Susan G.

After 20 years with the University, speech Professor Roger Conaway believes the timing in his life couldn’t be better for an “exciting venture.”

So, earlier this month he announced his retirement and his plans to move to Mexico at the end of the semester to teach at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

University Patriots displayed consistency and confidence in Saturday’s home game win against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

As part of the American Southwest Conference East Division, this match was an important battle for third place between the Patriots and the Cru, and the Patriots came out on top in three games, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-17.

The University volleyball team regularly digs and kills during a match, and on Oct. 25, digging and killing will benefit a good cause.

The Patriots will “dig for the cure” at their home match against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Oct. 25, which is scheduled to start at1 p.m.

The players are currently collecting pledges for the number of digs made during the match. All pledges, proceeds and donations will be given straight to the Susan G.

Tyler officials celebrated the opening of Fire Station No. 10 on Old Omen Road on Wednesday, and University Police Chief Mike Medders said he believes having a station close to the University will improve fire response time.

Before Fire Station No. 10, which is less than a mile from the University, there were two stations within three miles of the University and surrounding neighborhoods: Fire Station No. 7 on Troup Highway and Fire Station No. 8 on Shiloh Road.

As University student Kandace Simmons got ready for work, she felt the sensation of a bee sting on her leg after she put her pants on straight out of the laundry basket.

“I felt the spider bite me. It looked like an ant bite – a little blister came up immediately,” Simmons said.

She said she smashed the tiny inhabitant of her jeans the moment she felt it bite and never saw what it looked like.

It would later be determined as the bite of a brown recluse spider.

Don W. Killebrew, chairman of the University’s biology department, is a well-known spider enthusiast.

Patriots volleyball started conference play this week at home experiencing the agony of defeat, but ended with a taste of victory.

The Patriots couldn’t even win one game against two of the toughest teams in the American Southwest Conference East Division, but they redeemed themselves Saturday with a 3-1 win over Mississippi College.

Greek life is now under supervision of Brittany Temple, who started at The University as Greek Coordinator June 9.
