The Student Government Association members conducted their weekly meeting Thursday with no mention of the disputed president position or the five tied senate seats resulting from last week’s elections.

SGA presidential candidate Rusty Kuciemba filed a formal complaint to the Judicial Review Board on April 16 alleging Sara Khalifa, one of his opponents, received an unfair campaign advantage.

Hundreds of University students can see the light at the end of the tunnel, as graduation day swiftly approaches.

Some are arriving at their educational destinations – bachelor’s degrees – and then must choose which fork in the road will take them farther down their career paths.

Others may choose to wander the streets of academia a bit longer, as they seek master’s or doctorate degrees.

I send congratulations to all graduates, nearly 800 of you, for a job well done. You should be extremely proud of yourselves.

Officials continue searching this month for a new home for dozens of international flags displaced by University Center renovations.

Workers removed about 56 flags more than a year ago from the skylight rafters that served as the UC focus. The flags represent various members of the United Nations and the University’s international student population.

Kyle Horst, a senior journalism major, devoured the competition to win the first Patriot Burger Throwdown contest sponsored by the University’s dining service.

Shannon Mariani, director of dining services, said Horst’s winning burger creation is planned to appear on the menu at the Grille Works some time this week.

Students entered their Patriot-burger recipes either by e-mail or online survey.

Election duties prevented more than half of the Student Government Association members from attending their weekly Thursday meeting.

Only 10 senators and two officers comprised the general assembly.

SGA vice president Sara Khalifa, standing in for president Amy Whitehouse, presided over the meeting.

Parliamentarian Rene Hernandez said most of the absentees were manning election polls.

The meeting, lasting only 25 minutes, consisted of a series of senator reports, as the absence of a quorum prohibited any official business.

Five Student Government Association senate seats resulted in ties after the tabulation of students’ votes last Friday.
Parliamentarian Rene Hernandez said SGA officials plan to release more information as soon as possible regarding the tied positions.

I hope you all had a hoppy Easter. I certainly did, but I wish I'd had more free time. Homework again prevented me from spending the whole day with my family and from doing my usual holiday cooking and baking.

My fiancé's daughter Amber came to our rescue preparing a delicious meal for us, while I provided the desserts: Cherry Cream Cheese Pie and Luscious Pineapple Angel Food Cake.

Voters must decide between sophomore Yesenia Lugo and freshman Ashton Wright this week for Student Government Association’s secretary.

Both tout their experience and believe in strong communication as key to being a successful leader.

Lugo, a political science major from Little River Academy, said her experiences in the University Model United Nations, the SGA communications committee, and the Alpha Chi Omega sorority will help her perform the required duties of secretary.

Major campus construction is completed and no more is being planned, largely because of financial restraints, Vice President Gregg Lassen said Wednesday during a town hall meeting.

I remember eating Cherry Cream Cheese Pie for the first time in 1973, when my boyfriend's mother served me a slice. It was love at first bite for me, and I have loved it ever since.

Its taste is reminiscent of traditional cheesecake with cherry topping, but you don't have to bake this pie unlike cheesecake, which usually has a baking time of about an hour-in a water bath, too!

Who needs the hassle when you can whip one up in less than 10 minutes, pop it into the frig for three hours, and voilà-you have that distinctive delicious cheesecake taste.

I hope you enjoyed your spring break and are coming back refreshed and eager to knock out the rest of this semester.

I can’t say I’m refreshed because my professors assigned three papers for me to write, but I did enjoy some of my time off.
My older daughter Ashley and I had planned to leave Thursday morning for a three-day visit with my younger daughter Tracie in Fort Worth.

The Student Government Association members are sponsoring a town hall meeting from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday in the University Center Ballroom.

“It is open to all students, and we hope for a large turnout,” SGA secretary David Kelley said.

Kelley said Friday afternoon the agenda was not available at the time to report its scheduled topics.

He said some SGA members plan to attend to answer students’ questions about student government.

I looked through my recipe box this past weekend and found two quick and easy ones I believe you will enjoy.

The first one is a grown-up version of Sloppy Joes, called Sloppy Joe Casserole.

The original recipe lists ground meat as the protein source, but you can use ground turkey, chicken or sausage.

You also can be creative with the type of cheese you use. Pepper jack would be great!

The second recipe is Deluxe Nachos. It's great for an anytime snack or for a quick-fix supper, when you really don't know what you want to eat.

Student Government Association members passed a motion at their Feb. 25 meeting to purchase two new microwave ovens for the Business Administration Building.

SGA treasurer Andrew Barnson, who made the motion, explained why the organization was replacing one broken microwave with two. Barnson said because so many students eat lunch and dinner there, he saw a need for two microwaves.

My 16-year-old, 25-inch Sony TV went on the fritz in January after it made a loud popping noise.

The picture quality afterward had a greenish hue and the sound crackled with static.

I had been longing to own a new high-definition, flat-screen TV, so I wasn’t particularly upset by my old model’s timely demise.

I was sure a 31- or 32-inch set would fit easily inside my entertainment armoire, the focal point of my living room.

Student Government Association members elected Senator David Kelley as their new secretary.

Kelley and two other nominees vied for the position in a special election on Feb. 11.

He is a senior human resources development major, a member of the Student Government Appropriations Committee, and an SGA senator since August.

Each nominee addressed the assembly on why they would be a good choice. "I'm not only a qualified nominee," Kelley said, "I'm also very acquainted with the responsibilities of the office of secretary."

Hattie's Recipe Box

Hi, readers. Welcome to my recipe box.

I have had many requests for more recipes since I began my Meals, munchies and more column last fall.

The Talon staff and I have created this special online column to accommodate those readers hungry for more recipes.

I guarantee each published recipe to be one I have chosen from my own personal recipe collection compiled over the past 35 years.

Each recipe is going to be one I especially like and have prepared more than once.

It’s Feb. 12, our snow day—woohoo!
I don’t believe I’ve seen this much snow since the winter of 1982 when I was pregnant with my first baby.
I’m wearing sweats, a hoodie and bundled in a throw trying to keep warm as I write this column.
The temperature is 31 degrees outside and a chilly 57 inside.
Why so cold inside you ask?
