The madness surrounding global warming has more to do with political correctness than science.

Although Earth Day was celebrated just last week, global warming is not yet a big news topic this year. As we approach the summer, however, we can expect to hear more about global warming.

During the winter months, people jokingly call for more global warming, and Al Gore’s summer time speeches are the line of several editorial cartoons, but to many people it is not a joking matter.

Forcing Student Government Association candidates to disclose their criminal record when running for office would be an unnecessary obligation.

When the crime is related to specific duties of the job, such as the embezzling record of someone running for treasurer, it would be reasonable to require candidates to disclose their criminal record.

However, routinely forcing candidates to expose select details of their past, unjustly re-convicts them for a crime for which they have already paid the penalty.

For one, blanket disclosures serve only to label ex-convicts.

Texas’ Historically Underutilized Business program may be one reason for higher tuition at state supported universities. The 1995 HUB law requires state agencies to purchase up to 35 percent of goods and services from qualified businesses owned by women and minorities.

However, the cost of goods purchased from HUBs is often higher, and the program may actually be hurting those underutilized businesses.

For example, while working for another state agency, I learned about a practice that some big businesses use to access those HUB dollars.
