The political climate in Washington D.C. and the rest of the country will soon take a drastic change. With the new presidency, Democrats will have a majority in the house, senate, and will have the presidency.

As a result of this change, bipartisanship must be a priority foe everyone involved.

The most obvious reason bipartisanship is a new necessity is obvious – Republicans are outnumbered.

More than ever Americans are looking for alternative forms of fuel; an environmentalist dream. Although some environmental issues are getting attention, environment protection is still not getting the attention it deserves.

Finding alternative forms of fuel is a good first step to protecting the environment. However, environmental protection must be approached and examined on a broader level.

Americans are making some serious mistakes that can be easily changed, if we’re willing.

With the change in presidential power, there must be a change in foreign policy. Instead of investing money and lives in foreign wars, we need to redirect focus to humanitarian efforts.

Trying to save the Iraqi and Afghan people from tyrannical rule is admirable. However, it seems that our political leaders have turned a blind eye to humanitarian disasters such as the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Many people shy away from the word genocide. However, with approximately 800,000 deaths to date, the word genocide seems applicable.

Inevitably college students get sick every semester which leaves them searching for a way to pay for a doctor’s visit and possibly medication. College students do not have enough healthcare options.

College is a difficult time for students because they aren’t always being financially supported of by their parents. At the same time, being a full-time college student makes it difficult to make enough money to pay for healthcare and other expenses.

There are not enough healthcare systems set up specifically for low income students.

The University needs more motorcycle parking and students who drive motorcycles should be required to park in their designated parking spots.

Designated motorcycle parking spots would be a better use of parking areas. Motorcycle parking spots take up less room than parking spots for cars. More vehicles would be able to fit into a single parking area if more motorcycle parking is installed.

Motorcycle parking areas also would be safer for students at the University.

College is a different experience for every person. However, college freshmen tend to run into the same problems as their predecessors.

A common problem for college freshmen is taking on more classes than they can handle. College students have a lot of ambition their first semester and take on several classes or difficult classes. However, a student’s first semester is a transition period and taking more than 12 or so hours isn’t always the best choice.

Another problem new college students often run into is balancing school and a social life.

College students overbook themselves and often end up suffering academically.

Students participate in Greek organizations, honorary societies and other extracurricular activities in order to bulk up their resumes.

Employers require more of new employees than just a bachelor’s degree.

The pressure to have a good resume has students running from class to different meetings; this experience has both positive and negative aspects.

The University debate team is traveling to new heights of competition.

Although the team has not found success thus far in the tournament season, they are learning, said Jeffrey Hobbs, director of forensics.

Both tournaments this semester had at least 40 teams which showed debaters and University Director of Forensics Jeffrey Hobbs what is required for national success.

The debate team of senior David Brown and junior Jordan Innerity has been to two tournaments this semester, William Jewell College and the University of Wyoming.

At William Jewell College the team had a win-loss rec

The student body is lucky to have a University with comparatively few students. Typically when there are problems they get noticed and fixed by the administration.

However, at times it is up to the student body to get certain issues noticed. For instance, students often complain about the low number of classes offered for each major. Students should be offered variety in their education.

More than 5 percent of college campuses in 2004 reported cases of rape and attempted rape of college women according to the National College Health Assessment. This may seem like an inconsequential number but it does not take into account the number of unreported sexual assaults.

All too often female college students are sexually assaulted and do not report it. Kim Livingston, Wellness and Prevention Counselor, said there are several various reasons a college student may not report a sexual assault.

In some cases of college rape alcohol is a factor.

Overall the University serves the student body well, but ask just about any student and you’ll probably receive a few suggestions for improvement.

In a quick, informal survey this past week I heard a few likes and dislikes I would like to share.

A long time ago in a place far away, Dallas, I began my college career.

Paving the Way leaders Cad Williams, David Barnard, and Phil Jenkins worked to secure a gift of $50,000 from Nucor which brings the university to approximately $2.4 million of the $2.5 million needed the University’s Palestine Campus.

It is the time of the year when the University is abuzz with political debate.  Some are absolutely positive we need a change in office and policy while others are confident we should stay the course.  Also, year round there are plenty of complaints about university policy.  However when asked if they vote in either student government or Presidential elections most students say they don’t.  This problem begs the question how will students
