Honor. Discipline. Heart. Character. Loyalty.

 

These are the words that both current and former players use to describe what the world of sports competition has given them.


Being from a generation that grew up watching Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, and Cal Ripken, and learning about Johnny Unitas, Wilt Chamberlain, and Babe Ruth of past generations, I believe there is nothing more pure than the love of sports.


But in recent years, that all has begun to change.

The University’s baseball team kept its American Southwest Conference record unscathed with a sweep over Louisiana College on the weekend. The Patriots defeated the Wildcats 19-4, 8-1 and 19-8.

With the fourth place spot in the American Southwest Conference East Division still up for grabs, the margin for error was down to a minimum as the University’s men’s basketball team took on the University of the Ozarks on Saturday. The Patriots kept their head above water by demolishing the Eagles 94-66 at the Herrington Patriot Center.

University’s men’s basketball team played follow the leader with the women’s team last week.

The Patriots defeated Schreiner at home 74-61, beat Hardin-Simmons 79-75 and fell to McMurry 76-66.

The Mountaineers stiffled the Patriots usual fast paced offense and suffocated the paint in the first half.

The Patriots struggled to get off good shots and missed their last seven of the first half.

The Mountaineers took a 32-22 lead at the half, due in large part to a 10-0 run.

The University’s men’s basketball team is off to the best start in program history.

The Patriots opened the season with an 87-55 victory over Southwestern Adventist last Monday.

The winning continued Friday and Saturday in the Fred Jacoby I-20 Tip-off Classic at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots defeated Jarvis Christian 88-76 Friday and Howard Payne 65-58 Saturday.

The Patriots made the first basket and held the lead the remainder of the game against Southwestern Adventist.

While soccer may not be the most welcomed sport in the United States, that does not keep the United States from being the most welcomed thing in a soccer player’s heart. The women UT Tyler Patriots have their own patriotic salute to the US in defensive player Kelli Hill who serves in the Marine Corps while playing soccer for the Patriots.

When some people hit any kind of big mark, the feeling of an “end” comes into mind. As for head volleyball coach Kristee Phelps, hitting the century mark in her career win column only means the beginning of things. Phelps, in her ninth year of coaching and fifth year at the University, managed to capture her 100th win in a match against Mid-America Christian on the final day of the UT Tyler/Trinity Mother Francis Classic that was held a weekend ago.

BULLARD - An exasperated sigh of relief could be heard from Herrington Field at Brook Hill, as the Patriot men’s soccer team managed to tally a mark in the win column for the season and conference with their 7-0 victory over the Louisiana College Wildcats. Both Thursday and Saturday’s games were moved to Herrington Field on the Brook Hill campus in Bullard.

BULLARD - When the University women’s soccer team played the Lady Wildcats from Louisiana College Saturday morning, it was a classic game where fundamentals met kickball, as the Patriots pummeled the Wildcats 9-0.

The Patriots opened up conference play with a 4-1 win against Mississippi College at Herrington Field in Bullard on Thursday.
