Dr. Alisa White, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences said President Rod Mabry rewards student organizations for academic excellence. The University’s debate team has a budget of $41,984 according to Student Fee Advisory Committee’s recommendations. The funding comes from collected student fees.

More money means the team can represent at regional level but also travel to national tournaments, White said. Dr. Charles Walts, coach of the debate team said, “the majority of the budget is used for travel expense, however recruitment and research supplies is also involved.”

Journalism is often viewed as a negative, insensitive way to receive current news; however, journalism was meant for truth.

Understanding the truth is hard for people to do because today seems like a fib world. One little fib leads to another until the domino effect unfolds and truth is forgotten. The opportunity to have breakfast recently with LA Times columnist Steve Lopez, the award-winning author of “The Soloist,” brought light to the word “truth.”

Cases of H1N1, commonly called “swine flu,” appear to be on the rise and people are urged to exercise common sense to avoid contracting it.
Documented symptoms are common to the seasonal flu: headache, high fever, runny nose, sore throat, aching muscles, diarrhea or vomiting,  said Dr. Jeffery Levine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

Dr. D. Harold Doty joined the University in May to serve as the new dean of the University’s College of Business and Technology. He views the change as an opportunity to increase exposure of the department both in East Texas and beyond.

“UT Tyler presents a tremendous opportunity for business school dean,” Doty said.

Spring graduation held a record number of 909 graduates, but not everyone was able to share in the celebration.
The doors to the Cowan Center were closed when an overflow crowd of well-wishers exceeded the 2,000 available seats, forcing an undetermined number of family members, friends and supporters to wait outside.

“We had to adhere to the fire marshal rules, and avoid exceeding fines,” said Beverly Golden, director of news and information for the University. “Growth becomes a challenge at some point… we had 200 more candidates walking than we normally do.”

For about three hours on Friday part of the top floor of the Robert R. Muntz Library looked and sounded like a real courtroom.

Witnesses idled in the hallway waiting to be called to testify before a jury. Prosecuting and defense attorneys prepared their cases in whispers, while a panel of “judges” watched and ruled on their every move.

It wasn’t real, but for the Pre-Law Society members and criminal justice majors it seemed that way from the opening statements to the reading of the jury’s verdict.

The Tyler City Council agreed this month to lower the speed limit on Old Omen Road after Cambridge residents and University students complained the crosswalk at the main campus entrance is unsafe.

As a related issue, the city also plans this summer to embed flashing lights in the pavement to alert drivers of pedestrians in the crosswalk.

“The new [speed limit] ordinance is now in effect,” Susan Guthrie, City of Tyler’s Communication officer, said April 13.

Pre-law students plan to test their skills during the first undergraduate mock criminal trial scheduled for Friday. The event begins at 9 a.m. in Room 401 at the Robert R. Muntz Library. The Pre-law society is sponsoring a complementary breakfast at 8 a.m.

The trial is being set up as a replica of a courtroom with drama for entertainment.

“We have launched a mock criminal trial where juniors and seniors were chosen, to participate in the hypothetical fact pattern, where the alleged defendant is charged with an alleged arson and murder,” said Dr.

Slow down, and watch for new technology coming to the crosswalk on Old Omen Road. The University and the City of Tyler have partnered to create a safer crosswalk on the busy roadway to address driver and pedestrian safety.

Safety concerns over the crosswalk came to light Feb.
