Campus parking is a common dilemma among commuter colleges, but University students and administrators view the problem through separate lenses, especially regarding the need for a fee increase like the one proposed last week.

 

For staff tasked with finding solutions to a budget shortage that forced energy cutbacks and hiring freezes in recent years, parking fees can serve as an important source of revenue.

The Tyler Civic Theatre aims to serve as a community outlet for diversity during the holiday season with two events from its December lineup.

 

Scheduled a day apart from one another, the Chanukah-Klezmer Concert and the Tyler Community Band Christmas Concert provide audiences an opportunity to experience both a Jewish holiday celebration as well as traditional Christmas festivities.

Candice Lindsey has been appointed assistant vice president of enrollment management and marketing at the University, according to a news release.

 

Having served an interim since April 2011, Lindsey will continue to oversee the enrollment management and marketing division, which includes admissions, financial aid, the registrar’s office, marketing and communications and the Enrollment Services Center.

PersonalWeb, a Tyler, Texas-based technology company, released a beta version of StudyPods™, an educational social networking product, to a select group of University students on Dec. 6 for initial testing and feedback, according to a news release.

 

StudyPods is a new social learning platform that enables students to connect, collaborate and share academic knowledge with each other at their own universities or colleges worldwide.

Baylor University freshman Alex Eklund never imagined the Facebook status he posted after the Victoria’s Secret fashion show on Nov. 29 would attract the attention of people around the country.

 

The status read, “I’d rather have a Proverbs 31 women than a Victoria’s secret model.”

 

He posted the status after seeing female reactions to the fashion show on Facebook.

As part of its testing phase, Office of Marketing and Communications officials have posted a preview of the new University website, which is set to launch Jan. 13, according to a news release.

 

“We’re so excited to provide the campus with this preview,” Beverly Golden, director of the office marketing and communications, said. “Marketing and communications has invested a great deal of research, training and funds into the development of a new site that meets the needs of current and prospective students.”

In an effort to reduce congestion and enhance roadway safety, the City of Tyler will implement two traffic changes affecting Varsity Drive immediately after the fall semester, according to a news release.

 

Beginning Dec. 19, parking on Varsity Drive will be prohibited from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The prohibited areas will clearly be marked with signs, the release states.

 

Parking in front of the private residences at each end of Varsity Drive will not be affected.

Talk of budget constraints and campus expansion filled the University Center Theater on Nov. 9 as administrators gathered to address questions from students, faculty and staff at the Student Government Association Town Hall meeting.

 

The meeting gave students the opportunity to pry campus leaders for answers to questions regarding a proposed smoking ban, online faculty evaluations and dining services.

The territories that serve as the center of two major religions are set to become the center of learning for a group of students chosen for a study trip to Israel and Palestine for the spring semester.

 

Martin Slann, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said he believes the trip will give students a new perspective of Israeli and Palestinian culture and help them grasp the importance of Middle Eastern education.

Those wishing to get into the holiday spirit will be provided a charitable opportunity to do so later this month. The 2nd Annual Habitat for Humanity Heroes & Hope Benefit Concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 at First Presbyterian Church of Tyler.

 

Proceeds from the concert, coordinated by non-profit organization affiliate Habitat for Humanity of Smith County, will be used to provide low-income families a chance at homeownership.

With the upcoming implementation of a statewide health policy, new University students will be required to receive the meningococcal meningitis vaccine before enrolling for spring 2012 classes.

 

Texas education code 51.9192, established in 2009, will require students to receive a Meningitis vaccination before enrolling in classes starting January 2012.

Seniors Alex Warren, economics major, and Travis Smith, speech communication major are currently the top parliamentary debate team in America.

Like every Halloween season, haunted houses have returned to the Tyler area to provide entertainment to University students and surrounding community.

 

Preparations are underway at University Pines Apartments, where the Director of Marketing and Sales Toby Wilkerson explained construction was taking place inside the club house.


University Pines has provided a haunted house in past years, but this year things will be a little different, Wilkerson said.

The Tyler Type One diabetes foundation plans to facilitate an Endurance Challenge fundraiser to benefit children like Faith Wilson.

 

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m on Oct. 29 at Bergfeld Park.


Faith was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of nine months.


After taking her daughter to the Emergency room and being sent home with a simple flu diagnosis, Sarah Wilson said she knew “something was not right.”

The University plans to launch a new website in January, modifying content, organization and navigation and appearance.

 

“It’s part of the University’s ongoing efforts to enhance our customer service,” said Beverley Golden, director of marketing and communications.


Webmaster Robin Kelly said the site has been under production for almost a year.

Upon his arrival in January, Dilley will bring more than two decades of professional and higher education experience to Talon editors and staff.
