A $1.6 million student services budget had 11 programs receive increases or decreases during the summer with the addition of the drum line. Student Life and Leadership and Model U.N. received the biggest increases.

Dr. Peter Fos, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, said permanent funding through the Office of Academic Affairs is needed for the Model U.N. and moved the funding out of student fees. “There is so much value in the Model U.N. and we felt since it was more of an academic affairs area that we would take on the funding,” Fos said.

Student Government Association members agreed Thursday to investigate complaints about the lack of “green space” available for recreational sports.
Three students said collegiate sports teams receive preference to use the soccer practice field and other facilities, leaving intramural and club sport teams in the backseat.

“Coaches always say we have to be students first and athletes second. But we’re not even getting a chance to be athletes,” student Tim Records told SGA members during the organization’s weekly meeting. Records joined students Chris Stonestreet and Dean Mize in telling representatives they are disappointed in the way scheduling is being handled so far this semester.

At least twice a week outside the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center a deafening rumble fills the air. It’s not thunder. It’s the University’s new performance drum line practicing to make its debut this semester.

University officials announced the schedule for Parents Weekend to round out homecoming festivities. The alumni baseball game is scheduled for 7 p.m.  Oct. 16 at the baseball field.

A full day of events is planned for students and their families Oct. 17 starting with a family brunch at 11 a.m. The annual chilli cook-off and golf cart parade is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. with the University soccer games against LeTourneau University scheduled  for 6 p.m. The homecoming king and queen is scheduled to be announced prior to the men’s game at 8 p.m.
