University Police say a man who allegedly kidnapped a female student from campus remains in the Smith County Jail on a $750,000 bond.

At about 6 a.m. Sunday morning, William Fears, 22, entered the University Pines Apartments, 3333 Varsity Dr., and forced an 18-year-old woman to his car at knifepoint. The 18-year-old victim is Fears’ ex-girlfriend, police said.

University Police Chief, Mike Medders, said Fears did not drive into the gated premises, but entered the complex on foot.

Chick-fil-A opens in the UC

Freshmen Taylor Warren, Ericka Schiwietz, Aubrey Rife, and the Chick-fil-A Cow enjoy lunch at the soft opening of Chick-fil-A at the University on Friday. The grand opening of Chick-fil-A will be around October 1st.

Freshman business major, Megan Brown studies in the newly landscaped area outside the Robert R. Muntz Library on friday morning. The landscaping project which began early this year was privately funded by Mrs. Maurine Muntz. Mrs. Muntz is the wife of the late Robert R. Muntz, who our library is named after.

Chelsea Fiscus in game against Oklahoma Christian

The University’s Women’s Soccer team split their first two games of the 2009 campaign. They fell 2-1 to the Oklahoma Christian Eagles Friday, but recorded their first victory with a 2-0 win against LSU-Shreveport on Sunday.

In Friday’s game, Ashley Crawford scored the Patriots’ lone goal of the game in the 24th minute, which gave the Patriots the lead. The Patriots held that lead until the second half. Lady Eagles’ Callie White tied the game at one with a goal in the 63rd minute.

Jeff Chandler leads team to win cross country meet

The Patriots’ Men and Women Cross Country teams had strong performances Saturday in their first race of the season. The Men’s team took first place, while the Women’s team placed second in the meet, which was held at the University.

A University blood drive and bone marrow registration is planned for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29 in the mobile Carter Blood Care mobile in front of the HPC. Participants can choose to donate their blood to UT Tyler alumnus Jeremy Cotham of Longview.

Cotham, 23, graduated with a journalism degree in May and was diagnosed with leukemia in late summer. He is being treated at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and is in desperate need of blood and blood platelets.

Jeremy is an award-winning journalist who served as sports editor for the Patriot Talon. Carter is accepting whole blood or platelet donations on his behalf. Cotham’s donor account number is SPON048108.
