The University is reorganizing staff, reducing expenditures and freezing most new hires to respond to anticipated reductions in state funding.

In addition to a 5 percent cut in the current budget, University officials are gearing up for an additional 10 percent reduction for the current biennium, according to University officials.

"I don't want to panic. I want to prepare," Gregg Lassen J.D, Executive Vice President for Business Affairs, said.

Two University committees convened to identify and recommend ways to save money.

A Smith County grand jury indicted two East Texas men including a former University student on arson charges in connection with 10 church fires earlier this year.

Jason Bourque, 19, of Lindale is charged with five counts of arson and three counts of attempted arson.

Dr. Alisa White, professor and dean of the University's College of Arts and Sciences, is leaving her post to serve as provost of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.

White has lead the College of Arts and Sciences since 2006.

"I'll be sad to leave here. I have really strong connections with the leaders in this college and I love working with all of them," White said.

Hard work finally paid off for 793 degree candidates recognized during the University's spring commencement ceremonies, held May 8 and 9 in the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.

The University held separate ceremonies for the various colleges to accommodate overflow crowds of well-wishers.
