A failed comeback and an eight run inning highlighted the University’s baseball team’s troubles this past weekend.

The Patriots opened their season in the 2nd Annual Clements Fluids Easton Classic at Irwin Field with 9-8 and 12-7 losses to Mary Hardin-Baylor, and a 9-5 victory against The University of Texas at Dallas.

Troup Citizens for Progress, a pro-alcohol sales group, submitted a petition last week legalizing beer and wine within the city limits. Troup is about 18 miles southeast of the University.

This petition calls for “the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only, and the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food-and-beverage certificate holders only.”

Witness statements implicate a 21-year-old Tyler Junior College student in a fatal Oct. 14 shooting at Varsity Place Apartments, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Patriot Talon.

One witness told Tyler police she saw Jeremy Jarrod Walker cocking a gun in the parking lot where the shooting occurred and another witness reported hearing Walker say, “he fired the gun in the air,” according to an affidavit prepared by investigator Gregg Roberts.
