A stretch of land along Old Omen Road and Spur 248 has University officials vowing to find ways to furnish more “green space” for intramural athletes. A $625,000 donation courtesy of Mary John Spence in September of 2004 helped University officials purchase an 11.3-acre tract of land for expansion of the campus.

Four of The University of Texas at Tyler’s 2009 Distinguished Alumni will be honored at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the UT Tyler Ornelas Activity Center as part of this year’s homecoming activities.

Honorees are chosen based on outstanding contributions to their chosen profession since graduation from the University. Those being honored include Distinguished Alumni Michael Lujan, M. Ed. ‘01, Brett Sheldon, B.A.A.S. ‘89, and The Honorable James T.  Worthen, B.S. ’78, M.S. ‘99, and this year’s Young Alumna Donna Cummings, B.A.A.S, ’03.

Patriot’s volleyball split two American Southwest Conference games over the weekend at the Herrington Patriot Center. Thursday night, the Patriots took care of LeTourneau in four games by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-14.  On Saturday the Patriots fell to Mississippi in four games.

A Hallsville man is dead and another man is in custody following an early morning shooting Wednesday at Varsity Place Apartments, 3900 Varsity Dr., Tyler police said.

Keith Dotson, 21, of Houston, was arrested for unrelated warrants ...

Men’s and women’s soccer teams traveled to southwestern Texas over the weekend for two American Southwest Conference games against Texas Lutheran and Schreiner University. The men’s team was defeated by Texas Lutheran 2-1 on Friday afternoon. The women’s game was canceled due to rain. On Saturday, the women took care of business by beating Schreiner 3-0. The men’s game ended in a tie.
