With the current changes in the economy, students are gravitating toward degrees that will secure them with careers when they finish their education.
University students are not strangers to this trend as the most sought after programs are centered on specific professions.

“We do know that students do tend to go toward the colleges that are geared toward professions like engineering, education, nursing, business, but that’s always been true, Dr. Donna Dickerson, vice provost for academic affairs, said.

Leaders from People Respecting Individuals, Differences and Equality said the organization is making strides in their effort to address lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues on campus by raising awareness and influencing University policy.

“The goal of the organization is to be the LGBT outreach and education group on campus,” PRIDE President Lanie Parr said.  “In a conservative area like East Texas, there aren’t many places where LGBT people can feel at home.”

After the first game of Humans vs. Zombies held on campus Oct. 24-29, students are singing its praises.

“It kept you on your toes at all times and let you make new friends,” undecided sophomore Kade Barton said. “As someone that doesn’t make friends all that easily, it’s awesome to be able to meet new people.”

The men’s soccer team wrapped up their fifth American Southwest Conference Championship in school history with a victory over The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor on Sunday.

The Patriots won 3-0, earning the team a spot in the NCAA men’s soccer championships.

The game was played at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex in Tyler.

The University of Texas at San Antonio administrators’ recent decision to start a football program has some students wondering if The University of Texas at Tyler will follow suit.

The UTSA Roadrunners began their first football season in 2011 and will compete as an NCAA Division I Football Championship Series Independent school.

As students packed the University Center Theater for the Patriot Idol finale Friday night, Homecomings officials announced the election of Austin Castleberry and Tyler Lowing as the 2011 Homecoming King and Queen.

“I’m pretty excited,” Castleberry said. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out. It was really cool to see everyone come out and support.”

Opening a door, ascending a hill and reaching a second-floor classroom may seem like simple tasks to most University students.

But for Tegan Lattimer, senior English major, and Michael McEntire, sophomore English major, these tasks are daily challenges due to cerebral palsy (CP), a condition that limits mobility.

University students elected nine candidates to the Student Government Association senate during general elections last week, while three seats remain unaccepted.

Due to one-vote ties, four seats remain available, including a seat in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. There also is a seat available at the Palestine Campus and Patriot Village because the elected students rejected the positions.

Celebrations for the University’s 40th anniversary are underway, bringing together students, faculty and staff from past and present.

The festivities kicked off with a mid-June bash led by President Rodney Mabry and will continue via 40th anniversary-themed events scheduled through May.
