With the start of the spring semester, also comes another season of University baseball.

After a tough start to the season, Coach Kenny Bizot and the University men’s basketball team are looking to bounce back into the mix for a spot in the American Southwest Conference playoffs.

 

The team showed signs of promise in Thursday’s 49-45 victory over Sull Ross State University.

 

Guard Brandon Levine lead the team with 17 points, including 12 points from beyond the three-point line.

Coach Kenny Bizot enters his fifth season as head coach of the University men’s basketball team looking to key returners to lead the team to a win in the first round of the American Southwest Conference tournament.

 

While the Patriots qualified for the conference tournament in 2010 after going 12-14 overall and 11-9 in the ASC, Bizot and company were forced into a first-round exit by the hands of The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.


“A first-round loss is always bothersome,” Bizot said.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in the middle of the pack in their last meet before the ASC Championships.


 


Part of the men’s team made a trip to Oshkosh, Wisc. to compete in the NCAA Pre-National Meet while the rest of the team, along with the women’s team, traveled to Shreveport, La., to compete in the Centenary Invitational.

The men’s soccer team concluded the 2011 Homecoming Week with a 5-0 shutout of the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Saturday.

 

Earlier in the week, the Patriots led the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets 1-0 until a power outage forced officials to declare the game a no contest.

 

The theme of the week for the Patriots was ball control, and they displayed plenty of it between their two games.

With the soccer season under way, Coach Stefani Webb and the University women’s soccer team look to improve on last year’s 14-5 record.

 

The University finished in second place in the 2010 American Southwest Conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

Under the reign of Kenny Jones, head coach, the men’s soccer team has been projected to repeat as ASC men’s soccer champions through a preseason poll.

With the regular season in the books, the spring sports teams enter a busy weekend for the first rounds and meets of the American Southwest Conference championships.


Baseball is scheduled to play at Irwin Field starting April 29. Softball advanced to the semifinals at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park.

The Patriot tennis squads ended the 2011 regular season with an unblemished record in the American Southwest Conference, defeating the University of Texas at Dallas and Mississippi College over the weekend.

 

For the men, this is their eighth consecutive ASC east division conference title.

The University’s baseball team earned its 22-straight win after pounding Jarvis Christian 27-2 at UT Ballpark on Tuesday night. The victory helped the team secure third in the national rankings put out by D3baseball.com, tying a school record.

 

In the bottom of the first, the Patriots put a six-spot on the scoreboard after Justin Juneau, Nick Clifton, T.J. Martin and Jake Ashley picked up RBIs.

 

Jarvis Christian would not find their way onto the scoreboard until the sixth inning.

The University baseball team may have just opened American Southwest Conference play, but they are already in midseason form, collecting their 18th win of the season over East Texas Baptist University.

 

On Friday, the Patriots won 7-4 and completed the sweep during the double header on Saturday, winning 4-0 and 3-1.

 

Nick Clifton led the way with four runs batted in for the Patriots.

 

“It was a huge weekend because the conference season is critical for seeding,” head coach Paul Wyczawski said.

Fair weather permitted the Patriot track squad to open the 2011 season at Grace High School on Feb. 11, after a week of poor weather conditions and the winter chill had forced them to take to the treadmills for several workouts.

After one season with the University, Joanna Rathbun resigned as the head volleyball coach. The team posted a 16-17 record overall in 2010 and finished 8-9 in the American Southwest Conference.

 

“We had to start looking for a new coach right away,” Dr. Howard Patterson, vice president for auxiliary services and intercollegiate athletics, said. “The spring is not an ideal time for recruiting or finding a new volleyball coach for next season.”

SAN ANTONIO-The University's men's soccer held the top ranked team in the country to a scoreless battle, only to fall 4-2 in penalty kicks to Trinity University on Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA national tournament.

The women's basketball team just missed qualifying for the post season last year, finishing with an American Southwest Conference record of 8-12.

This season, the Patriots are predicted to finish fourth in the preseason polls, a spot that would make them eligible for the post-season conference tournament.
