Coach Kenny Bizot and the University men’s basketball team is looking to jump-start the second half of the 2011-2012 season and push for a spot in the conference tournament. The Patriots currently sit in fourth place in the East Division.

 

The Patriots began the second half of the 2011-2012 campaign on Jan. 5 at home, facing the Schreiner University Mountaineers.

Leaders from People Respecting Individuals, Differences and Equality said the organization is making strides in their effort to address lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues on campus by raising awareness and influencing University policy.

 

“The goal of the organization is to be the LGBT outreach and education group on campus,” PRIDE President Lanie Parr said.  “In a conservative area like East Texas, there aren’t many places where LGBT people can feel at home.”

University student Neal Clarke, 18, started experiencing homosexual tendencies when he was in 6th grade.

 

“By 7th grade I kind of accepted it in myself and was kind of like, ‘Okay this is who I am and I’ve got to come to terms with this before anybody else,’” he said.

 

Clarke said he was coming out to his family and friends by 8th grade.

After the first game of Humans vs. Zombies held on campus Oct. 24-29, students are singing its praises.

 

“It kept you on your toes at all times and let you make new friends,” undecided sophomore Kade Barton said. “As someone that doesn’t make friends all that easily, it’s awesome to be able to meet new people.”

Two members of the University debate team are ranked the No. 1 parliamentary team in the nation by the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence.

 

Seniors Alex Warren, economics major, and Travis Smith, speech communication major are currently the top parliamentary debate team in America.

The men’s soccer team wrapped up their fifth American Southwest Conference Championship in school history with a victory over The University of Mary-Hardin Baylor on Sunday.


 

 

The Patriots won 3-0, earning the team a spot in the NCAA men’s soccer championships.


The game was played at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex in Tyler.

The University of Texas at San Antonio administrators’ recent decision to start a football program has some students wondering if The University of Texas at Tyler will follow suit.


 

 

The UTSA Roadrunners began their first football season in 2011 and will compete as an NCAA Division I Football Championship Series Independent school.

The words adorable, unique and eccentric don’t even begin to describe the style of 21-year-old singer and songwriter, Christie DuPree.

 

When DuPree isn’t getting coffee or reading, she said she is writing music and playing in a two-piece, self-titled band with her 17-year-old brother Collin DuPree.

 

Christie plays acoustic guitar and Collin plays electric guitar.

As students packed the University Center Theater for the Patriot Idol finale Friday night, Homecomings officials announced the election of Austin Castleberry and Tyler Lowing as the 2011 Homecoming King and Queen.

 

“I’m pretty excited,” Castleberry said. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out. It was really cool to see everyone come out and support.”

Representatives from the Game Club plan to facilitate a Human vs. Zombie game on campus later this month.

 

The event is a game of moderated tag designed to simulate a “zombie apocalypse,” according to humanvszombies.org.

 

Amanda Davis, senior marketing major and event planner, said HVZ is a social game that she hopes many students will participate in.

But for Tegan Lattimer, senior English major, and Michael McEntire, sophomore English major, these tasks are daily challenges due to cerebral palsy (CP), a condition that limits mobility.

University student Kelsey Wade plans to display her work at the ArtWalk in downtown Tyler on Thursday.

 

For  Wade, sophomore art major, the event is a chance to expose her work to the public.

 

Wade said she participated in her first Artwalk in June.

 

The event served as a platform to share her art for the first time, she said.

 

“At the end of the day, I sold two pieces and found many people who were interested in my work,” she said. “It was a valuable experience and I’m thrilled to participate again.”

University students elected nine candidates to the Student Government Association senate during general elections last week, while three seats remain unaccepted.

 

Due to one-vote ties, four seats remain available, including a seat in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. There also is a seat available at the Palestine Campus and Patriot Village because the elected students rejected the positions.

When University student Bethany Bradley, sophomore piano performance major, missed a call from her father while attending Sunday school, she knew something was wrong.


 

 

“After calling my father back and hearing him break into sobs, and then being told that Ben died, I shut my cell phone and cried my eyes out,” Bradley said. “In a few seconds, life as I knew it was gone.”

The festivities kicked off with a mid-June bash led by President Rodney Mabry and will continue via 40th anniversary-themed events scheduled through May.

Dirt and dust blow around Kevin Murray, junior construction management major, as work continues on the two new research homes on the corner of Campus Drive and Patriot Avenue. The long process of building the two houses is beginning to wrap up while Murray directs the completion of the home’s interior design. Students will be able to use the two homes to study the effects energy efficiency methods have on households.

The University’s Ingenuity Center has been awarded an $8.75 million grant to improve student performance in middle schools and ultimately develop higher levels of both college and career readiness, according to a press release.

The Texas Education Agency will award the grant over a five-year period to Dr. Michael Odell, the University’s director of research and the Ingenuity Center’s executive director.
