Spring sports at the University ended May 21 when the Patriots' baseball team lost 9-8 to Mississippi College, eliminating them from the NCAA Div. III Regional tournament in McMinnville, Ore.

The team lost its first contest in Oregon 12-6 to Pomona-Pitzer, and kept itself in the tournament by defeating Chapman 6-5 before losing to the Choctaws.

ITHACA, N.Y. - Three University seniors received national recognition after being named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI At-Large Team.

Brad Fenter and Nick Kreines from the men's tennis team and Brandon Ellis from the men's golf team were selected for the honors, based on voting results of more than 2,400 members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Since 1952, the CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams recognize student-athletes who excel both on the playing surface and in the classroom.

HERSHEY, PA - A four-day score of 1204 (307, 309, 291, 294) earned the University's men's golf team an eighth place finish at the NCAA Div. III national golf tournament May 11-14 in Hershey, Pa.

NEW YORK - Junior right-hander and former Patriot Logan Chitwood was selected with the 575th overall pick in the 19th round by the Oakland Athletics.

"It's an incredible feeling that I've waited all my life for," said Chitwood, drafted on the second day of the 2010 MLB first-year player draft. "Just to hear my name called is an awesome feeling. I'm going to fight for a position and work my hardest and do whatever I can to help the organization."

PITTSBURGH - The University's men's and women's tennis teams saw their seasons come to an end in the NCAA Regional round May 13-15. The men's tournament took place in Pittsburgh, Pa., the women's in Claremont, Calif.

The women's team dominated its first round opponent Whitworth. The Patriots took all three doubles matches. Lauren Giovaninni and Brittany Trich sealed the victory with two singles wins. The win for Giovaninni moved her into first place all-time in singles wins with 60 at the University.

Paul Wyczawski, an assistant collegiate coach in Kentucky, has been named the new head coach after a three-month search that included more than 100 applicants.

Wyczawski (pronounced WHY-CHOW-SKI) comes from a six-year run of assistant coach at Murray State University and brings with him more than 25 years of coaching experience.

New lights installed this summer on the practice soccer field mean intramural sport enthusiasts won't have to stop playing at dark.

Students and University officials worked together to use $130,000 in student fees to purchase and install four posts with lights, Dr. Howard Patterson, vice president of student affairs, said.

This past fall some intramural players asked the Student Government Association for assistance to find a way to get more playing time on the practice field and proposed lights, recreational facilities director Bob Hepler said.

I am writing in response to Libby Moore's April 13 article in her Patriot Talon column, "Libby's Label," regarding changes in social studies curriculum for Texas public schools.

I should first congratulate her for earning her own column and commend her for her provocative articles.

Among my favorites are the inspiring manifesto published March 2 that is sure to empower women, and the bluntly romantic firecracker April 20, wherein she expressed hope for a relationship built on honesty.

A few years ago (ok, probably more than a few), Seinfield was dubbed "The show about nothing." Instead of being derogatory, this actually became a clever way of describing Seifield's goal to have no goals for his show.
