More than 30 University students swung hammers, lifted wall frames and sawed two-by-fours as the University sponsored Habitat for Humanity house began to take shape on Duncan Street in Tyler on Thursday.

Program officials said students plan to build a habitat house every year.

In order to have an open and honest student government on campus, the Student Government Association must post their agendas and meeting times at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.

The Texas Open Meetings Act’s purpose is to maintain an open government, where the public has knowledge on issues and pending legislation.

Even though it’s unclear if the TOMA applies to the SGA, meeting times and agendas are important to the student body for several reasons.

For University students, the SGA is the primary student organization that has the ear of President Rodney Mabry.

Hollywood award winner Shia LaBeouf stars in yet another science fiction thriller titled “Eagle Eye.”

Jerry Shaw, a college dropout and perpetual loner, goes to the ATM one day to deposit a check and finds his account went from less than $100 to $715,000 overnight. Upon returning to his apartment, Shaw finds numerous boxes, crates, and barrels filled with fake passports, classified documents, weapons, and ammonium nitrate, which is used in improvised explosives.

Despite its name, University officials say the Student Government Association isn’t a governmental body and doesn’t have to post an agenda as required by the Texas Open Meetings Act.

SGA officials aren’t sure if the law applies to them, and said they’re looking at other University of Texas system schools across the state for guidance.

More than 5 percent of college campuses in 2004 reported cases of rape and attempted rape of college women according to the National College Health Assessment. This may seem like an inconsequential number but it does not take into account the number of unreported sexual assaults.

All too often female college students are sexually assaulted and do not report it. Kim Livingston, Wellness and Prevention Counselor, said there are several various reasons a college student may not report a sexual assault.

In some cases of college rape alcohol is a factor.

University administrators are laying the groundwork for a $46 million technology and life sciences building on the southwest side of Harvey Lake next to the Robert R. Muntz Library, Gregg Lassen, vice president of business affairs said.

Lassen said he wants to build the new facility as an upgrade to current biology labs in the Hudnall Pirtle Roosth and Biology Education and Psychology buildings.

“The labs right now are sort of in the basement and they’re high school-quality,” Lassen said.

Ambort voted UTSAC Chairwoman

Student Government Association president Kerrie Ambort has been elected chairwoman for academic affairs committee for the UT system Student Advisory Council.

She will represent the student bodies of all 15 UT System universities.

“The Student Advisory council consists of student representatives from each 15 system institutions,” Ambort said. “In most cases it is the president of the class or of the Student Government Association.
