The University received hurricane Gustav evacuees Saturday night from Beaumont and city of Tyler officials say about 2000 evacuees arrived in Tyler.

"From 11 p.m. last night, until this morning, it has been a constant flow of buses and drive-ups," Mayor Barbara Bass said.  "As buses have arrived, the emergency response teams have mobilized additional shelters."

University officials have stocked the Herrington Patriot Center with 200 special needs beds in anticipation of possible hurricane Gustav evacuees from Beaumont.

City of Tyler officials have designated Tyler for special needs evacuees, including elderly, handicapped or hospital patients.

The University could possibly be a refugee shelter for Beaumont citizens fleeing hurricane Gustav, Tyler city officials announced today.

"The City of Tyler is fully prepared to respond should an evacuation be called," said Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass.
