The Patriot Talon, the student newspaper at The University of Texas at Tyler, earned the title of Campus Newspaper of the Year (non-daily) on Saturday from the Associated Press Managing Editors for the second consecutive year.
Officials announced the award during the APME annual convention in Austin.
The newspaper won the award last year as a bi-weekly and this year as a weekly.
“The Patriot Talon became a weekly this year and I am very proud of the students,” Dr. Marsha Matthews, interim chair of the Department of Communication, said. “Not only were the students able to meet the demands of a weekly schedule, but they were able to maintain the Talon’s high standards.”
Second place in the non-daily category went to The Flare at Kilgore College. The University Press at Lamar University received an honorable mention.
In the daily division, The Shorthorn at the University of Texas at Arlington received top honors followed by the Daily Skiff at Texas Christian University, The Lariat at Baylor University and The Daily Toreador at Texas Tech University.
“What an honor for these students,” Talon adviser Vanessa Curry said. “Reaching such a milestone last year was just awesome and, now, to repeat is just a testament to our students’ hard work and our program.”
