Student voters elected Amy Whitehouse to serve as the new Student Government Association president. Her term begins this fall.
Whitehouse, a junior psychology major from Wylie currently serves as the SGA vice-president.
She defeated opponent Rusty Kuciemba, a senior management major from Tomball, receiving 140 votes to his 72 votes during last week’s balloting.
Whitehouse said she hopes to continue her work with the administration and is working on a committee to research the benefits of allowing alcohol on the campus.
Vice president
Sara Khalifa, a sophomore accounting major from Tyler, defeated opponent Jamie Newburn 153-48 for the vice presidents post.
Khalifa currently serves in SGA as a senator for the freshman class and is a member of the Accounting Society and the Black Student Association.
She said she is prepared for her new role because she worked closely with the vice president on her committees and knows what is required of the position.
She said she hopes to increase student life by creating programs for incoming students, such as having orientation leaders lead groups throughout the year.
Newburn, a junior psychology major from Jacksonville, also ran for a senator post. He was elected as a senator for the College of Education and Psychology.
Secretary
Jennah Lewis is the new secretary after receiving 12 votes as a write-in candidate.
Tiffany Allison was on the ballot for secretary, but withdrew from the race.
Treasurer
The new treasurer is Andrew Barnson, a freshman psychology major from Las Vegas, Nev. He received 37 votes as a write-in candidate.
Barnson currently serves as a SGA senator and said he looks forward to “continuing to play a role in the development” of the University and the students.
Parliamentarian
Rene Hernandez, a junior psychology major from El Paso ran uncontested for the seat of parliamentarian and received 175 votes.
He said he plans to continue to serve in this role.
He said he likes to work behind the scenes and brings a “good, calm, collected head” to group decisions.
