DALLAS — Members of the Patriot Talon, the student newspaper at The University of Texas at Tyler, earned 20 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association during the organization’s annual awards ceremony April 11 in Dallas.

The Talon earned a second place in overall points against 14 other Division 2 schools including the winner, Tarrant County College. This is the Talon’s first year to compete as a weekly newspaper.

Also for the first time, the Talon won two awards for its online news coverage including first place for the best breaking news story. Former editor in chief Allen Arrick and web editor Raydene Crawford won that category for their coverage of Hurricane Gustav refugees on campus.

“These students really exceeded my expectations,” Talon adviser Vanessa Curry said. “Since it is our first year in this higher division, I thought we would do well to be somewhere in the middle of the group. Placing second overall is quite an achievement.”

Points are given for top winners in various categories for writing, photography, page design and advertising. The entries were all published in the previous calendar year.

Students also competed in on-site contests April 9 at the convention. All students regardless of school enrollment compete as a group.

Senior journalism major Christy Grant placed second in the news release writing contest in the on-site contest.

In the previously published competition, Arrick lead the team with seven individual awards. Those consisted of first place for feature photo, single subject presentation and sports page design; second place for informational graphic, photo illustration, page one design; and third place for editorial writing.

Other winners consist of:

• Jeremy Cotham — honorable mention for sports feature writing

• Adrienne Graham — third place advertising design

• Christy Grant — honorable mention for sports feature photo

• Melissa Greene — second place general column writing and honorable mention for news feature writing

• Kyle Horst— second place sports action photo and honorable mention for critical review writing

• Ashlie Osburn — second place in-depth reporting

• Travis Webb — honorable mention for general column writing

As a staff, the Talon won honorable mention in the overall excellence category.
