More than ever Americans are looking for alternative forms of fuel; an environmentalist dream. Although some environmental issues are getting attention, environment protection is still not getting the attention it deserves.
Finding alternative forms of fuel is a good first step to protecting the environment. However, environmental protection must be approached and examined on a broader level.
Americans are making some serious mistakes that can be easily changed, if we’re willing. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, paper, a recyclable material, takes up the most space in landfills.
Furthermore, the average home in the United States accumulates 100 pound of hazardous waste annually. Urban areas can be two to 10 degrees warmer than rural areas.
Some might be wondering how these statistics will influence them. EPA statistics show one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Also, students miss 14 million school days due to asthma-related illness, this number is only rising.
Pollution also is evident on the local level. In East Texas hunting and fishing is popular entertainment. It is all too common to get on a Texas lake or in a wooded area and find trash where wildlife should be.
Pollution affects the health and happiness of all Americans today and in the future. If we do not turn the tide of our mistakes, we are stealing opportunities from our generation’s children.
Simple changes in behavior can help create positive change. Noted environmentalist Theodore Roosevelt once said “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
Recycling programs can be started. Take time and volunteer to pick up trash. Turn off lights when you leave a room. It will be good for you and for your environment.
If we do not protect the areas we live in no one will.
