College is a different experience for every person. However, college freshmen tend to run into the same problems as their predecessors.

A common problem for college freshmen is taking on more classes than they can handle. College students have a lot of ambition their first semester and take on several classes or difficult classes. However, a student’s first semester is a transition period and taking more than 12 or so hours isn’t always the best choice.

Another problem new college students often run into is balancing school and a social life. In college you meet a lot of new people and have opportunities that weren’t available during high school. Sometimes even the hardest working students get distracted.

Finally, students tend to burn the midnight oil too often. There is a misconception that once in college all-night study sessions are an avoidable occurrence. College doesn’t immediately make students superhuman, odd hours always have negative results. Burning the midnight oil too often can quickly turn into burning out.

There is a simple answer to all these problems, moderation. Take a balance of difficult and not so difficult courses in the first semester. Remember, all work and no fun will make you crazy but keep your mind on school. Finally, don’t forget you’re human. Sleep is a necessity, not an option.
