Works of art created by members of the University’s art faculty are on display in the Meadows Gallery in the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center until Oct. 3.

The 2008 Art Faculty Exhibition features artwork created by faculty within the Department of Art and Art History. They are Gary C. Hatcher, Sue Duran, Dewane Hughes, Philana Oliphant, James R. Pace, Alexis Serio, Merrie Wright and gallery coordinator Ray Sikes.

Several forms of art are on display at the gallery.

“I chose to create contraptions and gadgets that are thick, complex, layered, and enigmatic,” artist Dewane Hughes said. “My inspiration comes from the pre-digital, mechanical debris that is beginning to fill the physical, visual, cultural and psychological landscape of our culture.”

Gallery talks featuring Serio, Wright, Sikes and Pace are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday. They will speak from beside their artwork in the Meadows Galley.

Each artist plans to discuss their particular form of art.

“My work is driven by an innate need to understand myself and my relationship to the world around me,” Professor Wright said. “’Urban Wildlife’ is a portrait of the animals struggle for survival and adaptation.” From Oct. 13 through Oct. 24, the gallery is scheduled to display Mark Anderson’s Master of Fine Art Thesis Exhibition. The exhibit is in partial fulfillment of his Master of Fine Arts Degree.

The Meadows Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
